In the 1830s the city was officially recognized by the State of Georgia and was named Marietta after the wife of Georgia Supreme Court Judge Thomas Willis Cobb. Marietta was a prosperous town because it was selected as the headquarters for the Western and Atlanta Railroad. During the Civil War, General Sherman invaded the city and it was the first city to burn during Sherman’s March to the Sea. Marietta has since rebuilt and is home to Dobbins Air Force Base, Lockheed Manufacturing Plant, Life University, Southern Polytechnic State University and Chattahoochee Technical College.
