Hull Identification Numbers on New Vessels (O.C.G.A. § 52-7-7.2)

Legal Commentary. This statute is regarding the numbering of vessels with regard to the sale and operation of vessels. Since 1972, manufacturers have been required to have a hull identification number before selling or delivering the boat. A hull identification number, or HIN, is a 12-digit or 17-digit number assigned by the manufacturer. No two boats have the same HIN. Additionally, the number cannot be changed in any way after it has been sold or delivered to a dealer. Because of these unique characteristics of HINs, it is smart to write down your HIN and store it in a secure location. That way, if your boat is every stolen or your HIN gets damaged due to a Georgia boating accident, you still have the number for insurance and warranty problems.
